Availability: All editions. Requires both the Payroll add-on module and the Tally integration to be enabled for your account by an Administrator. The Tally integration is aimed primarily at organisations in India that keep their books in Tally.
Overview
Organisations that run payroll in CrmLeaf and keep their accounts in Tally would otherwise re-enter payroll figures by hand each month. The Tally integration lets payroll data be synchronised to Tally instead, so payroll and the ledger agree. The integration is a Goods and Services Tax aware accounting sync to the Tally desktop application through a local agent.
How It Works
Payroll is processed in CrmLeaf first. Once the period is reviewed and its status updated, the payroll data for that period can be synchronised to Tally.
Run payroll → Review → Update status → Sync to Tally → Reconcile in Tally
- Tally runs on the desktop, so the sync uses a local agent rather than a direct cloud-to-cloud connection.
- Only reviewed payroll data should be synchronised, because corrections after a sync must also be corrected in Tally.
- The integration is enabled per company, alongside the other accounting integrations.
- Reconciliation in Tally remains the responsibility of your finance team.
Who Can Use This Feature?
Administrator
- Confirm the Tally integration is enabled for the account.
- Synchronise reviewed payroll data to Tally.
- Reconcile synchronised data with the finance team.
This functionality is available only to Administrators.
Prerequisites
- The Payroll add-on module enabled for your account and your role.
- The Tally integration enabled for your account.
- A working Tally installation, with the local agent required by the integration in place.
- Payroll for the period generated, reviewed and its status updated.
- Agreement with your finance team on how payroll figures should appear in your Tally ledgers.
For Administrators
Step 1: Confirm the integration is enabled
What to do: Confirm that both the Payroll module and the Tally integration are enabled for your account.
What to verify: Both are available before you attempt a sync.
Step 2: Complete the Tally connection setup
What to do: Complete the Tally integration setup for your account, including the local agent that connects to your Tally desktop installation. The connection steps are covered in the Tally integration article.
What to verify: The connection is established before payroll data is synchronised.
Step 3: Agree the accounting treatment
What to do: With your finance team, agree how payroll amounts should be represented in Tally, including how salary cost, deductions and statutory liabilities are to be posted.
What to verify: The agreed treatment is documented before the first sync, not after.
Step 4: Process and review payroll first
What to do: Generate payroll for the cycle and department, review the payslips, and update the payroll status. Only then move to the sync.
What to verify: The period is final. Syncing unreviewed payroll creates rework in your ledger.
Step 5: Synchronise the payroll data
What to do: Run the payroll sync to Tally for the reviewed period.
What to verify: The sync completes and the period synchronised is the period you intended.
Step 6: Reconcile in Tally
What to do: With your finance team, reconcile the synchronised payroll figures in Tally against the CrmLeaf payroll report for the same period.
What to verify: Totals agree. Investigate any difference before the next period is synchronised.
Expected Result
Reviewed payroll data for the selected period is synchronised from CrmLeaf to Tally, and the figures in Tally reconcile with the CrmLeaf payroll report for that period.
Important Notes
- Menu names and their position can differ between product editions and can be customised for your account, so your sidebar may not match these paths exactly. Use Search or your Quick Access items if you cannot find a screen.
- Both Payroll and the Tally integration are add-ons. Confirm both are included in your plan before you plan a month-end process around this sync.
- Synchronise only after payroll has been reviewed. A correction made after a sync must be corrected in Tally too.
- Statutory contribution rates, wage thresholds and filing deadlines are set by the relevant government authorities and change over time. Confirm them with a qualified compliance advisor before a live payroll run, and note that a sync does not validate statutory correctness.
- CrmLeaf produces payroll and statutory filing outputs. Neither CrmLeaf nor the Tally sync files returns with any authority on your behalf.
- Tally is desktop accounting software, so a local agent and a reachable Tally installation are required.
Common Scenarios
Example: month-end close. Payroll is processed and reviewed by the fifth, synchronised to Tally the same day, and the finance team reconciles the salary cost in Tally against the CrmLeaf payroll report before closing the month.
Example: a correction after sync. An error is found after the sync. The Administrator corrects the source data, regenerates payroll, and works with the finance team to correct the corresponding entries in Tally rather than assuming a second sync will resolve it.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| The Tally sync option is not available | The Tally integration is not enabled for the account, or the Payroll module is not enabled | Ask your Administrator to enable the integration and the module. |
| The sync does not reach Tally | The local agent or the Tally installation is not reachable | Confirm Tally is running and the local agent required by the integration is in place, then try again. |
| Synchronised figures do not match the payroll report | Payroll was regenerated after the sync | Reconcile against the current payroll report and correct the entries in Tally with your finance team. |
| Payroll data for a period cannot be synchronised | Payroll for the period has not been processed | Generate, review and update the status of payroll for the period first. |
